Freelance Whales at the Basement

With last year’s Diluvia LP, Queens combo Freelance Whales mastered the art of softly delivered, expansively conceived folk-pop, the kind that spans the gap from Urban Outfitters to “Grey’s Anatomy.” (Like, they literally used one of the songs on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and yes, that show’s still on.) It’s post-Arcade Fire, post-Sufjan, post-M83 in its approach to tearing up your naïve widened eyes.

If that doesn’t whet your thrifted whistle, folksy electronic act Hundred Waters and feisty, pop-tinged post-punks Il Abanico are both worth a listen too.
