The Darkness at the Newport

I didn’t spend much time at Rock on the Range last year, but I’m glad I stopped by long enough to see The Darkness once again belting out retro-appreciative arena rock in full stars-and-stripes regalia.

Hot Cakes, the album they released last year, is just as welcome a return. If you can get past the off-putting opening track “Every Inch of You,” in which Justin Hawkins declares “Every man, woman and child wants to suck my c---,” you’ll be home free into guitar solos and multi-tiered harmonies stronger than any gimmick.

The Darkness plays the Newport this Wednesday with Hell or Highwater.
