Staff Pick: Garage greats The Cynics can still cause damage

Pittsburgh garage greats The Cynics are one of those punk bands for whom time stands still, but never the audience at the rock club. They are also the kind that writes songs with titles like “Rock Club.” On Spinning Wheel Motel, the double-decade veterans’ latest LP, they show how much damage their chosen weapons can still dole out, wielding the power of nasty descending chromatic riffs and killer choruses in kind. And if their style gravitates toward the party music of decades long past, a sarcastic chorus like, “All good men beat their women/ All good boys beat their girls” shows their value system isn’t stuck in the same kind of retro vacuum.

Hexers, a Columbus combo with a similar aesthetic, opens Thursday’s show at Double Happiness.
