Staff pick: Mount Moriah's Southern rock is plainspoken but sneakily satisfying

Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

When Chapel Hill guitarist Jenks Miller isn't plumbing Greek mythology with his metal project Horseback, he's naming his dusky, female-fronted alt-country band after a mountain from the Bible. The guy got a lot out of his comparative religion courses

The latter band, whosesophomore LPMiracle Templewas one of early 2013's most sneakily satisfying listens, plays the Basement this Saturday. Its music is roughhewn and plainspoken, registering as a slightly twangier, more laidback cousin to fellow topographically inclined Southern songbird rockers Black Mountain.

Though this show was originally slated for the Basement, Mount Moriah has been moved next door to open the Next@Wex Fest, featuring The National.
