Staff pick: Pop experimentalists Julian Lynch, The Luyas to assist each other at Kerouac

From the same suburban New Jersey scene that bred Real Estate and Titus Andronicus sprang Wisconsin-based academic Julian Lynch, either one of today’s most approachable experimentalists or among the most experimental pop acts depending on how you tilt your ear. Lines, Lynch’s latest, presents electro-orchestral psych-folk built to mesmerize.

Sonic brethren The Luyas hail from Montreal, but its music lives in the same headspace — that is, it’s also gorgeously entrancing, content to let good ideas float through wide open spaces. The late, great Broadcast comes to mind.

When the two acts play Kafe Kerouac this Sunday, they’ll back each other up, which will probably be among the most splendid up-close-and-personal encounters available this summer.
