Looks like Columbus musician Jared Mahone won that Verizon contest we mentioned a couple weeks ago! From a press release Tuesday:

Verizon announced today that Jared Mahone and his band were named the winners of the first Indie Icon competition. As the grand prize winners for this nation-wide contest, the Columbus-based six-piece will be flown to New Orleans to perform at the 2013 Essence Festival July 5-7.

Jared Mahone was selected as one of five finalists from thousands of entries across the country, and is the only act representing Ohio. Last month, the band was flown to Chicago to shoot a music video and perform an exclusive show at Buddy Guy's Legends. Jared, who classifies his music as "garage soul", was pleasantly surprised to be selected as a finalist in a contest featuring predominately hip-hop, R&B and gospel artists. Mahone commented, "I'm the white guy at the black show, and I'm so glad to be accepted. I might look out of place, but I couldn't feel more at home."
