Concert preview: More swell concert venues worth the road trip

Between the Paper City Music Festival in Chillicothe and Mumford & Sons’ massive Gentlemen of the Road Stopover in Troy, we’ve been thinking a lot this week about venues within a quick drive of Columbus that might be worth a road trip. Although most major tours land in one of Ohio’s major urban centers, occasionally something awesome happens one of the state’s tinier markets. Here’s where, more specifically.

Stuart’s Opera House, Nelsonville

Drive time: 65 minutes

Who’s played there: Arcade Fire, Gillian Welch, Califone, Andrew Bird, The Avett Brothers, Steve Earle and many more

Vibe: Adorned old-timey theater, chairs still bolted to the floor, is reborn as an intimate haven for beloved indie- and roots-rockers as well as film and community theater

Majestic Performing Arts Center, Chillicothe

Drive time: 57 minutes

Who’s played there: David Mayfield Parade,Kopecky Family BandJohn Berry He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister

Vibe: Continuously operating for 160 years and counting, the Majestic is old as dirt but bright and shiny as the sun, bringing music, theater and more to Chillicothe’s former Masonic Hall and Opera House

Vibe: Yet another decaying timeless space has been resuscitated into a home for music, comedy and theater

Vibe: Cozy neighborhood bar brings local and regional Americana acts (including several Columbus favorites) to the site of the Circleville Pumpkin Show
