Most people attend church on Sunday, but this Friday, Sept. 13, music fans will have an extra chance to be taken to Chvrch.

Prior to hitting the stage at Newport Music Hall later in the evening, buzz-worthy Scottish trio Chvrches will stop by Magnolia Thunderpussy, 1155 N. High St., for a free in-store performance that kicks off at 3 p.m.

The band arrives in town in advance of its full-length debut, The Bones of What You Believe (out Sept. 23), which refines the 1980s-leaning, electro-pop sound the crew explored on its breakout EP Recover.

Life has been a blur for bandmates Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty since the EP first surfaced in March. Mayberry, in particular, expressed surprise at the group's rapid rise in an interview earlier this month, saying her phone started ringing off the hook the instant the first songs were posted online.

"I remember being at work and wondering why my phone was going off so much," she said. "It was like, 'What's happening?!'"

Those curious to see what all the fuss is about can check it out for themselves this weekend at Magnolia Thunderpussy and/or when the band hits the stage at the Newport, 1722 N. High St., later the same evening. Tickets are $17 in advance/$20 the day of the show, and can be purchased at
