Concert preview: Kid Cudi and Tyler the Creator present rap as intensive therapy

The Cleveland producer/rapper’s latest album, Indicud, opens with the sound of crickets. It’s a rare moment of peace from an artist who can never quite escape the damaged thoughts clouding his brain. New songs like “Immortal” and “Burn Baby Burn” are no exception, with Cudi alternating between world-beating confidence (most would say overconfidence) and soul-crushing depression. This is music as intensive therapy.

Tyler the Creator, the creative force behind Odd Future (full name: Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) and an artist similarly obsessed with the inner workings of his own twisted mind, serves as the warm-up, while Maryland rapper Logic rounds out the bill.
