Concert preview: Typhoon's indie-rock far more manicured than name would suggestion
While the sprawling Portland indie-rock crew (the band performs with as many as 14 members) might conjure images of all-out chaos with its natural disaster of a name, its sound is actually far more manicured. The songs on White Lighter, which surfaced earlier this year, tend towards the orchestral, and there are a number of moments of striking intimacy surprising from a collective of this size.
The group should strike a commanding presence amid the relatively cozy confines of the Black Box on Mershon stage — a venue whose coffin-esque name is certainly befitting of a band prone to penning death-obsessed lyrics like “Soon enough you’ll be dancing at my funeral.” Radiation City opens.
