Staff Pick: Skeletonwitch brings death and destruction to the Newport

The five long-haired, tattooed and bearded dudes in Skeletonwitch could pass for extras on “Sons of Anarchy,” and their music espouses a similarly violent ethos.

Just check the track listing for Serpents Unleashed, the forthcoming effort from the Athens, Ohio, metalheads, which includes songs like “I Am of Death (Hell Has Arrived),” “More Cruel than Weak” and “Blade on the Flesh, Blood on My Hands,” which could double as the title to a gnarly b-horror film.

Even so, there’s more to the band’s music than death and destruction, and cuts like “Burned from Bone,” undergo several evolutions, shifting from melodic guitar passages to pulverizing turns built on galloping drums that conjure images of the Black Riders from “Lord of the Rings.” The group opens here for Ghost B.C., so be sure to arrive early to revel in the chaos.
