Staff Pick: Starlight Girls take a darker turn with an assist from Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart

The Brooklyn indie-rock quartet embraced a moody, film-noirish sound on its self-titled 2012 EP, turning out a handful of smoky, throwback tunes that wouldn't have seemed out of place playing somewhere in the background during a scene from David Lynch's "Blue Velvet." Things took a somewhat darker turn on an Oct. 7-inch the Girls recorded with Xiu Xiu mastermind Jamie Stewart, which the band described on Facebook as "a tasty treat to hold the hungry children over until the 2014 release of the full-length LP." Consider us satiated, at least for the moment. Best of all? This Monday evening show is absolutely free - a total boon in a season where paychecks are often tied up doing the thankless grunt work (read: shopping) for Santa.
