Concert preview: Angela Perley & The Howlin' Moons set to unleash a Hurricane

“Hurricane,” the lead single from the local crew’s debut album, Hey Kid, has been circulating for months, popping up on the radio (it was in regular rotation on CD 102.5) and, oddly, on college football telecasts (ABC played a clip of the tune during a November game between UCLA and USC). Now everyone can get a taste of the full album when the band celebrates its release with a weekend concert at Skully’s Music-Diner.

Those whose sole exposure to the band is its glam-stomper of a single might be taken aback by the rest of the record. Elsewhere on Hey Kid Perley dials it back, delving further into roots-rock on a handful of comparatively tender cuts that find the singer/songwriter dealing with a host of past ghosts. It’s haunting stuff.
