Staff Pick: Comrade Question travels back in time with Pepe Polo
Comrade Question could pass for the name of a villain from an old episode of “The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.” The local crew’s sound is similarly indebted to the early ’60s, layering on jangly garage-rock guitars, hazy guy-gal vocals and more tambourine than one would find at a revivalist church service.
This concert doubles as a release party for the group’s latest album, Pepe Polo, which sports a proudly retro vibe, as though its 10 tracks could have been laid to tape decades ago. Best of the bunch might be the slinky “Winds,” though a case could also be made for “Bastard,” a bounding garage-pop gem that left me humming to myself in spite of early February’s single-degree temperatures.
Fellow locals Cliffs and Connections round out the evening’s killer lineup.
