Concert preview: New Zealand metal Ulcerate darker than an eclipse on the pulverizing Vermis

The New Zealand-based death metal band’s press photos look like they were taken amid a power-outage — a reflection of its eclipse-inducing music, which tends to be as thick and black as a prehistoric tar pit.

Ulcerate’s fourth album, Vermis, which surfaced on Relapse Records last fall, continues this trend, marrying the musicians’ technical prowess (drummer Jamie Saint Merat, for one, plays with a precision that would be the envy of Swiss watch makers) to an array of marauding tunes that have dried blood beneath the nails.

Locusta and Inter Arma open the show.
