Staff Pick: Embrace the arrival of warmer temperatures with the Alive Summer Kickoff Concert

Andy Downing, Columbus Alive

Summer is (finally!) here, and to mark the occasion Alive is hosting a free concert featuring three great local bands: power-pop collective The Girls!, alt-rockers The Wet Darlings and symphonic prog-pop duo The Receiver, which recently delivered a killer set opening for Dan Boeckner's much-buzzed-about new project Operators, and was stoked to be headlining the outdoor space. "We've never played [Columbus Commons] before," singer/guitarist Casey Cooper said following the band's mid-May set at Double Happiness. "I'm going to have to move around a bit up there and take advantage of the [larger] space."

The festivities kick off promptly at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 23, and will include on-site beer specials from Great Lakes Brewing Company and a host of tasty treats from food purveyors Melty Crue, Junior's Tacos and Tortilla.
