Staff pick: Old Hundred finds new life in death
The local folkies in Old Hundred sound a bit obsessed with the grave on their latest EP, I Don’t Want to Die, a five-song effort the band will unleash with a record release show at Ace of Cups on Friday. “I get this feeling I’ll be there when you die,” frontman Blake Skidmore sings on one tune. “But it’s not scary, baby, it’s just life. It’s just time.”
Despite the heavy themes, the music itself tends to feel weightless, buoyed by airy violin, delicate acoustic picking and the group’s knack for hummable, shopworn melodies. Indeed, it appears 2014 is gearing up to be a big year for the crew, as the musicians intend to follow this teaser EP with an August full-length whose title, Let in the Light, hints at brighter days to come.
Van Dale and Dolfish open the show.
