Editor's Picks: 19 things to do this weekend

Staff Writer
Columbus Alive

Holy shitake! Talk about a weekend chock-full of fun stuff. Two huge festivals are this weekend, in addition to a haunters convention, amazing rock and hip-hop concerts, a planetarium tour and much more. As always, here's what I'd do if I could be everywhere all the time.

Parquet Courts at Double Happiness

My favorite rock album of the year, though it's only a week old. Catch these guys now before they really blow up.

Phoenix Rising Printmaking Coop: Art in German Village atGerman Village Society Meeting Haus

Park Street Festival in the Arena District

Old Hundred at Ace of Cups

Old 97's and Lydia Loveless at Newport Music Hall

Columbus Arts Festival at Downtown Riverfront

Offset at OSU Urban Arts Space

Reel Paddling Film Festival Screening at Columbus Kayak

J Rawls' The Legacy release show at Double Happiness

Columbus hip-hop pioneer J Rawls isn't so much retiring, as he is stepping back from the spotlight. It's time for the next generation of rappers, producers, promoters, etc. to step up. Before that happens, though, Rawls is due a victory lap. Check out his latest album, the appropriately titled The Legacy, at its release show at Double Happiness.

"Palo Alto" at the Gateway Film Center

Gallery Hop in the Short North

Midwest Haunters Convention at the Greater Columbus Convention Center

Heatwave! at Ace of Cups

Get Right with DJ Giovanny at Skully's Music-Diner

Band of Skulls at Newport Music Hall

Farmers market at North Market

Hank3 at Newport Music Hall

Hank3 takes me back to my days covering West Virginia's arts scene many years ago, and, particularly, to The V Club, one of Dub V's best music venues. Think Ace of Cups, but a little dingier. In other words, the perfect spot for some Hank throwdowns. You ain't seen a rowdy show 'til you've seen a Hank 3 show. And you ain't seen a Hank 3 show 'til you've seen it in a dingy Huntington rock club. The Newport, however, will more than suffice.

"The Edge of Tomorrow" at a movie theater

"Cosmos" finale party and planetarium tour at Gateway Film Center
