Concert preview: British singer/songwriter Jake Bugg cleans up on his sophomore album

On his self-titled debut, British singer/songwriter Jake Bugg cast himself as a some kind of folk/Brit-pop hybrid, tackling crackling tunes like “Lightning Bolt” with a youthful restlessness that belied the age of the source material.

Last year’s follow-up, Shangri La, was a comparatively polished (and less interesting) affair, buffing away some of those rough edges in favor of a more radio-friendly approach best exemplified by the streamlined punk of “What Doesn’t Kill You.” Here’s hoping he scuffs things up again when he hits the Newport stage.
