Staff Pick: Rappers Method Man and Redman bring Smoker's Club tour to the Newport

In the 2001 film “How High,” rappers Method Man (of Wu-Tang Clan fame) and Redman costarred as students who ace their college entrance exam with help from some herbal essence, so it makes complete sense the pair would headline the latest round of the Smoker’s Club tour, which visits Newport Music Hall on Friday, Oct. 24.

Onstage, as in the film, the duo has an easy camaraderie, honed over the course of two albums (Blackout!, released in 1999, and Blackout! 2, from 2009), countless shows, and a string of advertisements shilling for a deodorant company. Though the rappers don’t shy from dropping stoner admissions, their songs typically aren’t as hazy or blunted as their reputation suggests, and it’s not unusual to hear the two trade intricate rhymes with all the grace and flair of the Showtime-era Los Angeles Lakers running the fast break.

B-Real, Berner and Mick Jenkins open the show.
