Editor's picks: 28 things to do this weekend in Columbus

Staff Writer
Columbus Alive

It's a good weekend to be a nerd and/or geek in Columbus, regardless of your interests. (Or whether you're really much of a nerd/geek at all.) Comedy nerd? There's a festival for that. Video and board games? Two things going on for you. Comics? Yep, there's a talk and signing this weekend. Sports? Yep, that counts, too. As always, here's what I'd do this weekend, if I could be everywhere all the time.

Method Man & Redman at Newport Music Hall

Run the Jewels 2 was surprised-released this morning, which, really, couldn't have been more perfect timing because, well, it's Friday, so happy weekend, but also: One of the greatest rap duos ever comes to the Newport Friday. To get ourselves even more hyped, we counted down our favorite hip-hop duos of all time.

Ohio Game Developer Expo kickoff at Strongwater and Studio 35

Chris Volpe wants to turn Columbus into a destination for video game creators. His first step in doing so? This weekend's Ohio Game Developer Expo, which kicks off Friday at Strongwater with live music and game previews, among other stuff. Then hit up Studio 35 at 11 p.m. for a screening of "The King of Arcades."

Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky book signing at Laughing Ogre

Hopefully, you were able to make it to Fraction and Zdarsky's talk at CCAD Thursday, but if not, you've got another chance to see the creators of one of my favorite ongoing comic book series, "Sex Criminals." They're stopping by Laughing Ogre Saturday for a book signing. Be forewarned, you might get something signed with white-out instead of ink.

HighBall in the Short North/Arena District

The city's biggest Halloween party goes down Saturday. If you didn't hit up Friday's '80s-themed concerts, this is the day you'll want to attend. I'll be going as Teddy from "Bob's Burgers." Oh, and look for Alive's Abernathy Miller (who'll be there as the Bride of Chucky) at the costume judging contest. And while you're waiting for the ish to go down, read our Q&A with the creative team behind this year's HighBall.

Sip fall beers that are NOT pumpkin flavored

Count me among those who love autumnal beers, but not pumpkin flavored ones. This roundup from Breakfast with Nick's Nick Dekker couldn't have been more timely. That Seventh Son one literally made my mouth water.

Columbus Crew vs. Philadelphia Union at Crew Stadium

Oh, it feels good for the Crew to be back in the playoffs. Don't miss the regular season finale Sunday. Playoff implications still abound, and the team'll be giving out tons of free swag for its yearly fandemonium giveback.
