Concert preview: Jamaican Queens stray far from the sun on Wormfood
While the name Jamaican Queens might conjures images of beachside escapades, the oddball Detroit crew’s songs tend to fixate on harsher life realities like crime (weirdly infectious, pulsating mugger anthem “Kids Get Away”) and death. “I’m sorry about the earth around you caving in,” they sing on the funereal “Caitlin.”
“We’re all worm food,” the band reminds listeners on the title track off last year’s Wormfood, an admission that plays more like a statement of fact than a sign of surrender.
Sweet-Teeth and Reptile Fiction open the show.
