Staff Pick: Rich Homie Quan is a star on the rise

It wasn’t long ago you could have dismissed Rich Homie Quan as another Future knock-off. His emotive songs, delivered with equal parts melody and heart, were just similar enough to incite derision in some corners. Not this one. I was all in from the start, and last year’s Rich Gang release Tha Tour: Part1 only further solidified my intrigue.

Young Thug’s alien squawks might garner more attention (for obvious reasons), but the tape was one of my favorites of the year mostly because of Rich Homie. He anchored the tape, for one, helping to keep Young Thug’s helium voice wrapped in a balloon and tied to a string, but he also just straight up raps, leaping over bars with skill and aggression like a hurdler.

The growth he exhibited on the tape suggests he might not be done improving either, so this Saturday’s solo show serves as a great chance to see an ascendant star on the rise.
