Concert preview: Yo Gotti spits straightforward street tales on I Am

Andy Downing, Columbus Alive

On "I Am," the title cut off Yo Gotti's 2013 full-length, the Memphis rapper traces his cold heart to his violent surroundings, detailing gunfire and crying families with the emotional detachment of a veteran detective surveying a crime scene. The songs, in turn, tend to avoid big, emotional swells, favoring matter-of-fact descriptions of the drug trade and its various gains (wealth, power) and ills (prison, death). Expect a similar approach on the forthcoming Art of the Hustle, which is expected out in November.
