Concert preview: Futurebirds embrace past sounds on road-weary Hotel Parties

Andy Downing, Columbus Alive

Futurebirds embraces a retro sound on its third full-length, Hotel Parties, which surfaced earlier this year. Over the course of the album's 11 tracks, the Athens, Georgia five-piece dabbles in road-weary country ("For You"), shimmering southern rock ("Paranoia Letters") and, on "Let It All Loose," woozy, psychedelic balladry. And while the lyrical themes are nothing new (life on the road is challenging, yada, yada, yada), the bandmates have a way of spinning this lingering discomfort into hazy, soul-soothing sounds.

Waylon Speed opens the show.
