Concert preview: Justin Bieber
Regardless of how you feel about the saga of Justin Bieber, you can't deny his musical talent. While his latest,Purpose,by-and-large functions as an apology slideshow for his tumultuous reputation, it's also a reminder of the music we were missing from the pop icon. It's understandable if the nature ofPurpose is a hard sell, but some of its songs truly are diamonds.
The biggest contributor toPurpose's success - and showing how far Bieber's sound has come since his "Baby" days - is its team of producers. Longtime Bieber collaborator Jason Boyd and superstar dubstep DJ Skrillex (somehow) worked magic as the album's primary architects. The result isn't anything too fancy, but it does create moments so genuinely rapturous they catch you off guard. Highlights include "What Do You Mean?" and "Where Are U Now," which feature the vaguely retro, arcade-like textures that have become trademarks of pop-slash-dance acts like Grimes and Disclosure.
No matter where you fall on the Belieber scale, I can't see how the Purpose World Tour won't be at least a little fun, if high on the bombast.
Post Malone and Moxi Raia are set to open.
