Staff pick: OUR SCENE: Band in a Hat showcase
The inaugural OUR SCENE: Band in a Hat showcase was among my favorite concert experiences of 2015. During the three-hour event, nearly 40 musicians formed eight bands, each of which performed a two or three-song set (including a cover). The results were as varied as the musicians themselves, stretching from the slow-burning menace of guitar-heavy Cassandra to Crystal Labris, which turned out one original steeped in 1960s girl-group nostalgia and a droning, funky cover of ESG's "Erase You."
This year's showcase again returns to MINT, a mixed-use South Side arts space, with doors opening at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 29. And while the show is designed to attract more women, transgender and non-binary individuals to form bands and participate in the scene (performers are exclusively drawn from players who don't identify as straight, white cis men), everyone is welcome to attend the showcase, with a suggested donation of $5 payable at the door.
