Concert preview: Superdreamer Summer Party

Joel Oliphint
Day Creeper

Since the label's 2013 launch, Superdreamer Records has felt like the successor to Columbus Discount Records, the label that introduced our city (and sometimes the world) to bands like Times New Viking, Necropolis, El Jesus de Magico, Guinea Worms, Unholy Two and Psychedelic Horseshit. Spencer Morgan's Superdreamer takes its cues from CDR aesthetically (handmade/homemade everything) and sometimes stylistically (a band like Ipps features former CDR artists). But Superdreamer doesn't rehash or copy. The label blazes its own trail of tape hiss while respecting the rich history of Columbus' art-rock past.

Psychic Wheels and Comrade Question kick off the party with some psychedelic garage rock, followed by the fuzz-pop of Ipps, led by the husband-wife team of Bo and Emily Davis. Former Red Feathers frontman the Pink Owl will put on a solo performance of his sold-out cassette release,Sub-Psychic Souvenirs, followed by HYTWR, aka Winston Hightower of hardcore band Minority Threat; last month Superdreamer released Hightower's also-sold-out, decidedly un-hardcore cassetteToo Close to Home. Closing out the night will be Aaron Troyer's long-running garage-pop project Day Creeper, whose 2015Central States LP is a shining jewel in a Superdreamer catalog that's strong, growing and more than worthy of a feel-good summer party.
