Staff Pick: Independents' Day to reveal lineup at Skully's show

Joel Oliphint

The organizers of Independents' Day, which will again take over the streets of Franklinton this year with multiple stages, food and drink vendors and visual art galore on Sept. 17 and 18, have already revealed some of the bands scheduled to play the local fest. While ID has dabbled in national acts in the past, the fact that Cleveland indie-rock act Cloud Nothings is on the early-announce list means there are likely more non-Columbus bands on the way - a potentially significant change to ID's hyper-local focus.

Of course, there will be locals aplenty, too, the biggest advance announcement being a reunion performance by Columbus' onetime preeminent alt-rock act Phantods, which called it quits in 2012. (If you're unfamiliar, go to to download everything the band released for free.) Other early reveals include notable DJ Mix Master Ice of the old-school UTFO crew, rapper Envelope and power pop-rock foursome the Sidekicks.

On Friday, ID is throwing a free party at Skully's to announce the rest of the Independents' Day lineup, and what better way to announce some bands than by hosting some bands? Playing the lineup reveal show are hip-hop duolabel me lecter, brutal metal purveyor theBlack Antler, pop experimentalistTurtle Island and laser-eyed electronic duoroeVy.
