Staff Pick: Masqueradio

Andy Downing, Columbus Alive

This Halloween weekend,Alive, in tandem with CD102.5, is hosting the first-ever Masqueradio, a costume-optional bash featuring performances from seasonally appropriate acts roeVy, Damn the Witch Siren, the Receiver and Juke Box. The whole thing goes down at Newport Music Hall on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Headliner roeVy - a pair of laser-eyed druids - specializes in dark, pulsating electronica that would sound perfectly at home during a midnight dance party deep in the Paris catacombs. Electro-pop duo Damn the Witch Siren treads more mystical ground on its latest,Back to Dreaming, which seeks escape from the pressures of grownup life in a series of lush, fantastical, synth-based tracks. As a Halloween bonus, the group is something of a modern "Monster Squad," helmed by a witch (singer Bobbi Kitten) and a werewolf (guitarist/keyboardist Z Wolf). Unlike the other performers, brothers Casey and Jesse Cooper of the Receiver shun costumes, but the songs on the pair's excellent and melancholicAll Burn are ideally suited to the fall season's moodier vibe. Oh, and the best part? Tickets are only $10 for this all-ages show.
