Concert preview: Figgy Fest

Joel Oliphint

About six years ago, David Banbury and Lou Poster were hanging out at Café Bourbon Street, kicking around ideas for a Christmas punk band in the vein of Iggy and the Stooges. The most important part of such a band would be the name, of course, and the pair came up with a fitting one: Figgy and the Scrooges.

Figgy Fest is now an annual holiday tradition that grew so big it had to relocate from Bourbon Street to the more-spacious Ace of Cups. This year's distortion-fueled extravaganza will feature bands with names like 3 Speed Sleigh, Placenta Claus & the Human Santapede, Ebenezer Booze and the Iggy Pop-inspired founding band. Players from local acts such as the Ferals, Grafton, Nervosas, Times New Viking, Planktones and more contribute to this punk-rock holiday show, plus DJ Krampus (aka Ian Graham, formerly of the Rock and Roll Radio Show on 1270AM) spinning records between bands.

The event is also a fundraiser for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, with a suggested donation of $7. No word yet on whether figgy pudding will be served.(Safe bet)
