Staff Pick: DANA album release at Ace of Cups
Local four-piece DANA earns its all-caps moniker with its blistering live show, which gamely straddles the line between art-punk weirdness and bruising, back-alley rock 'n' roll. DANA's raw-nerve energy was on full display when it closed out Alive's Bands to Watch showcase earlier this year, and it translates perfectly to the band's self-titled, full-length debut, which surfaces this week on the consistently awesome Heel Turn Records. (The album release show takes place at Ace of Cups on Saturday, March 11, and boasts a powerhouse opening lineup, including Bloody Show, Outer Spacist and Winston Hightower.)
In concert, frontwoman/force of nature Madeline Jackson alternates between a sorceress, twisting and waving her arms to conjure creep-inducing sounds on the theremin, and a pugilist, hurling words like rib-shots on wrecking balls like “Mr. Goddamn.” Added punch arrives via the contributions of guitarist Bobb Hatt, whose noise-rock roots prevent him from ever playing it too straight, and the battery of Chris Lute (drums) and Albert Gray (bass), who keep the sound tethered even in those moments their bandmates toe the edges.
