Concert preview: Scarface at Newport Music Hall

Rick Allen

By all rights, Scarface is free to coast on the success of the Geto Boys' 1991 track “Mind Playing Tricks on Me,” a harrowing morality play that still stands as a defining moment in the power of hip-hop. Like an aging gunslinger, Scarface returns to the forefront, channeling his community's rage at injustice and the ugly turn this country made in 2016 with “Black Still,” a reworking of the holy grail of political hip-hop, Public Enemy's “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos.” Scarface exposes the flaws in the previously untouchable original and brings the narrative up to date. It's a cry for justice and a plea for understanding. 8Ball & MJG open. (Safe bet)
