Concert preview: New Year's Eve at Ace of Cups

Joel Oliphint

There's a nostalgic feeling to the 2018 version of New Year's Eve at Ace of Cups. Instrumental post-rock act Brainbow used to be a fixture on the Columbus scene, putting on epic, swelling performances of its own originals, or maybe the “Lord of the Rings” soundtrack. Or that one time the band provided the live musical canvas for Blueprint's rhymes. Whatever the show, a Brainbow reunion is something you'll want to see.

The last couple of weeks,Alive has been reminiscing on favorite releases from 2018, but back in 2010, one of the best things to come out of Columbus wasTime and Temperature's seven-track mini albumCream of the Low Tide. Go find it on Bandcamp and bask in the beauty of Val Glenn's hypnotic guitar and glassy vocals to prep for this performance.

AsIpps, Bo and Emily Davis (formerly of Necropolis) put out one of the best Columbus records of 2017,Life's a Mess, a fuzz-pop record full of meditations on and observations of loneliness and social awkwardness and the weirdness of existence. “I watch the other humans interact/The range of emotions, how do they live like that?” Bo Davis sings on “Head Off.”

Egon Gone and the Sun Dogs round out the bill.(Don't miss it)
