Concert preview: WHY? and Speedy Ortiz at Skully's

Joel Oliphint

When Speedy Ortiz singer/guitarist Sadie Dupuis spoke to Alive in 2016, she had just made demos of some new songs and retreated to a beach house in Massachusetts to arrange the tunes with her bandmates. “We learned 10 songs in four days — just woke up in the morning and practiced until we went to bed. It was freezing cold — like 35 degrees in April — but that was a fun way to learn,” Dupuis said at the time.

Some of those songs may have found their way onto Twerp Verse, Speedy Ortiz’s 2018 album, but Dupuis has said the band scrapped much of the early material, and given Dupuis’ politically charged tendencies (in Speedy Ortiz and in her solo project, Sad13), it’s easy to see why. The world shifted in strange ways at the end of 2016, and Twerp Verse is tied up with anxious, angry, ’90s-indebted indie-rock that reflects that new reality.

Co-headlining this show is Yoni Wolf’s indie-rock/alt-rap outfit WHY?, which last year celebrated the 10th anniversary of its genre-defying landmark album, Alopecia. It’s a bewildering, irresistible record that juxtaposes grotesque and profane rhymes alongside intimate, heartrending admissions and cheeky humor, all wrapped in a kitchen-sink aesthetic, with pysch-folk and indie-pop flourishes over hip-hop beats. (Safe bet)
