Staff Pick: GZA and the Soul Rebels at Jazz & Rib Fest

Joel Oliphint

The Jazz & Rib Fest kicks off today (Friday, July 19) along the Downtown riverfront and goes through Sunday, July 21, with a whole bunch of food and music. But the best thing about this year’s fest? Tonight at 9 p.m. you can see Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA for free.

The legendary rapper and lay philosopher/scientist (hence his other nickname, Genius) is teaming up with New Orleans brass ensemble the Soul Rebels, a group known for collaborations with artists diverse as Metallica, Nas, Lauryn Hill and Marilyn Manson. For a small-scale version of what’s in store, check out GZA and the Soul Rebels’ Tiny Desk performance from last year, featuring songs like "Living In The World Today” and "Duel of the Iron Mic” from the rapper’s legendary 1995 solo album, Liquid Swords.

You can find a full listing of this year’s Jazz & Rib Fest lineup here, including another 2019 standout: pedal steel powerhouse Robert Randolph & the Family Band, playing the Genoa Park stage on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
