Staff pick: Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets

Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets

Few songwriters have achieved such a satisfying late-career renaissance as Suffolk-born songwriter Nick Lowe. After releasing still-beloved solo albums Jesus of Cool (1978) and Labour of Lust (1979) and early collabs with Rockpile (not to mention production credits on albums by the Damned, Elvis Costello and the Pretenders), Lowe could have rode off into the sunset and nobody would have blamed him.

Instead, Lowe, now 70, resurfaces with new music every few years, his voice pleasantly aged and his songwriting in tip-top shape. (Around the Oliphint house, his 2013 holiday album, Quality Street: A Seasonal Selection for all the Family, is a perennial favorite.) In recent years, Lowe has teamed up with masked Nashville surf-rock act Los Straitjackets, and in May they released four-track EP Love Starvation (Yep Roc).

In press materials, Lowe had this to say about Love Starvation's title track: "It has a kind of Ritchie Valens feel to it that I thought might suit Los Straitjackets. It’s funny, that song could’ve been a Rockpile song. But in a way, I don’t think I was good enough to write a song like that back then. It sounds like old stuff, but I’m just better at doing it now."

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, CAPA is bringing NickLowe’s Quality Rock & Roll Revue starring Los Straitjackets to the Davidson Theatre (inside the Riffe Center). While that performance is enough reason to head Downtown on a Tuesday night, don't miss opener Esther Rose, a rising singer/songwriter from New Orleans (via Detroit) who recently released her sophomore album, You Made it this Far (Father/Daughter Records), a collection of twangy folk songs with a lyricism that's consistently a cut above (hence her inclusion on this bill).

For a quick preview of what's in store, here's Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets performing "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding":
