Daily Distraction: Be a 'Cowboy' with Bill Callahan
Ponder the American West with the former Smog frontman
In addition to releasing a bunch of recent pandemic collaborations with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Bill Callahan also put out a great album, Gold Record, last fall. Today, Callahan released a cinematic new video for "Cowboy," a contemplative, slow-burn track from the LP.
Few artists can convey such gravitas with just an acoustic guitar and a motel bed, though the video is also intercut with beautiful footage of mariachi bands, birds, a bugle.
"Cowboy" is a meditation on the American West, particularly the fantasy-fueled version of the West as portrayed in old movies. The video, directed by Anthony Gasparro and Mikey Kampmann, brings the song to life, "depicting the world of big skies, frontiers and a wilderness that's been colonized but has yet to be tamed," as label Drag City explained in a release.
Check out the video below, and don't miss Aquarium Drunkard's conversation between Callahan and the directors as the three discuss cinema, kindness and tuna melts.
