Columbus lands the rare mid-sized concert with Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird
The August 2022 tour stop is a rarity amid recent concert announcements, which have seen musicians increasingly bypass the city for Cincinnati’s newly constructed Andrew J. Brady Music Center
Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird recently announced the “Outside Problems” tour, which will kick off in June 2022 in Phoenix, Arizona, and includes a Columbus stop at Kemba Live outdoors on Aug. 9, 2022.
Normally, we wouldn’t post a blog touting a pretty run-of-the-mill concert announcement, but the fact that a mid-sized tour is actually stopping in Columbus is noteworthy, considering that a number of newly announced 2022 tours have opted to bypass the city in favor of the Andrew J. Brady Music Center in nearby Cincinnati. These most recently include Jack White (April 2022) and Haim (May 2022).
The year-round venue, which opened in July 2021, includes an outdoor stage for hosting riverfront concerts and festivals in the adjacent park, making it a more attractive destination for shows that otherwise might have made it to the LC, er, Express Live, er Kemba Live (effective Jan. 1). In other words: Columbus music fans might have to get accustomed to gassing up, particularly for some of those more buzzworthy artists.
The dates with Iron & Wine will mark Andrew Bird’s first full-band shows in nearly three years following select solo performances in 2021. The two artists first met and collaborated for a pair of performances in Yosemite in October to support national parks, which you can watch below.
“I’m not sure why it took so long for me to meet [Iron & Wine's] Sam Beam,” Bird said in a press release announcing the tour. “His music I have known and admired for many years now. What a lovely guy. The kind of guy that would help you move.”
