Columbus' central location makes it pretty easy to get anywhere in Ohio without too much trouble, including nearby small towns (many of which have been documented in Alive's monthly Weekend Wanderlust series). In recent years, historic theaters in the quaint downtowns of these closer-than-you-think cities have been renovated and revitalized, including in Newark and Nelsonville, where talent buyers consistently bring in artists that are worth the drive.

On Friday, Feb. 18, Thirty One West in Newark will host legendary soul singer Bettye LaVette, and that same night, the gorgeous Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville will present Waxahatchee, which is touring behind one of the band's best albums, 2020's Saint Cloud. The record is also one of singer and songwriter Katie Crutchfield's first releases that incorporates and embraces the Alabama native's Southern roots. While not quite country-rock, the songs on Saint Cloud branch out from heart-on-sleeve indie rock to heart-on-sleeve Americana, which makes for a beautiful blend that's perfectly suited to Crutchfield's singular singing style.

"Fire" remains my favorite track from that record; check out the video below.
