Change we need
Why do so many of us women feel the need to revamp our look with the start of a season?
Are we just marketing victims, tricked to believe we must spend our hard-earned dollars each season on anything and everything? Or is it a natural process to shed the layers of seasons past to reveal a fresh, new us?
Maybe it's a bit of both. As naturalist and author Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."
So, if being trendy is merely a survival instinct, then consider these major fall beauty trends to carry you through the season.
As seen on the Bottega Veneta, Thakoon and Proenza Schouler fall runways, shades of purple offer a fresh look for the eyes. Unlike some other colors, purple doesn't come across too costume-y and is flattering on all skin tones.
For a day-to-night look, give the classic smoky eye a twist with rich plums and lilacs, as found in MAC's eye shadow quad. Or try a blue or purple mascara, such as Benefit's Bad Gal, for just a hint of color that also makes eyes looks brighter.
Go bold for night with a matte violet from N.Y.C.'s mosaic eye shadow compact brushed from lashes to crease.
Benefit Bad Gal Brightening Blue mascara, $19 at Sephora
MAC Cult of Cherry eye shadow quad in Shadowy Lady, $36 at Saks
N.Y.C. Color Wheel Mosaic eye shadow in Purple Rain, $4 at Target
While gold is often associated with the warmer seasons, Chanel took an unexpected turn for fall and went with heavily gilded eyes, cheeks and even nails. While their limited-edition Gold Fiction nail polish goes for a whopping $30, you can get the same look at half the cost with Lippmann Collection's polish in Nefertiti.
For eyes, Urban Decay offers an affordable loose powder eye shadow that comes with a unique brush for easy application. The shimmer factor is light enough that it works for day, but it can also be vamped up for night when paired with Avon's eye crayon in Copper.
Urban Decay Loose Pigment in Gold, $20 at Sephora
Avon Big Color eye pencil in Copper, $6, click to Avon.com to find your local representative
Lippmann Collection nail polish in Nefertiti, $15 at C.O. Bigelow
