Helping someone choose a wine from the hundreds in a shop is always an exercise in careful listening. But The Wine Guy Wine Shop owner Craig Decker's starting point is typically the three main varietals -- pinot gris, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. They span a range of palettes, he said.

These examples are classic crowd-pleasers among his customers, but Decker stresses that "nothing is a must. You really want to focus in on what you like."
