Sparkle & stretch
Sequined tops and short skirts are slowly selling for end-of-the-year celebrations. But Lyn Sarvis didn't expect brisk wintertime sales.
In fact, she didn't even expect to open her women's clothing shop, Lai Boom, until the spring. But when space opened in the Short North, she knew she had to have it. "I really had a month to get all this together," she said.
Lai Boom opened in early November. It's quite an upgrade from selling skirts and dresses, essentially, out of her trunk.
"I was selling clothes ... from New York ... at the club where I work," Sarvis said. "I was doing well at it, so I was like, 'I might as well open a store.'"
The clothing and accessories she offers in the copper-colored space are an expansion of the items she used to bring back from trips to New York City, and they're aimed at ladies getting ready for a night out.
Bright colors abound, including embellished teal tops, sparkly strapless orange and leopard-print dresses and plenty of halter tops.
Her selection of stretchy leggings have been popular, Sarvis said. One black pair features screen-printed "stitching" designs - front and back - made to look like jean pockets and belt loops, and black and white stripes run from thighs to shins.
Accessories like thick bangles and silver dangly earrings are among the jewelry she's gotten in so far, with necklaces soon to come.
She shoots for affordable prices, so jeans and other special requests, like sweater dresses, are probably out of reach.
Since she had hoped to open in March or so, there's plenty more inventory coming then. Sarvis plans to add a section of exotic dance clothes, as well as purses and shoes.
