Shopping: Halloween on High

With only one week left to get your ghastly getups, here's a look at costumes and supplies you can find without leaving Columbus' main street, starting from the north.

3301 N. High St., Clintonville

Wigs and accessories line the walls, and crinoline skirts dangle from the ceiling. You'll find both new and consigned costumes for guys and gals.

I'd recommend getting fishnet or lace tights here. And there's a stock of fake glasses that are just begging to be used in a zombie Buddy Holly outfit.

Costume pick : Someone making clever use of the flannel lumberjack beards. My vote is for a Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox duo.

University of Halloween

1434 N. High St., South Campus

This is a pop-in-for-the-season shop in the space beside Hungry Howie's. You'll find the cheap Halloween standards here, such as haunted house-esque masks, gallons of fake blood, wigs and tons of costumes.

I loved the "Alice in Wonderland"-style mini top hats that sit on the side of your head with birdcage veils attached. It's also the best place to find fake eyelashes.

Guys looking for raunch, there are plenty of costumes that play on your particular endowments.

Costume pick : The lineup of "Sesame Street" characters

Sexy Halloween Costumes

1174 N. High St., Short North

The name pretty much implies what you'll get, as do the costumes. Each rack has a helpful sign listing what type of costume you'll find on it. Cute character hair accessories abound.

This store is set up by its neighbor, The Garden, where you'll find more expensive, more detailed racy costumes. Be sure to check out the shoes at The Garden. If you're going as a sexy lady sailor you must get the knee-high boots with anchor insignias.

Costume pick : Slutty drum major

Flower Child

989 N. High St., Short North

Don't be fooled by the old-school Christmas stuff they have out when you walk in. This consignment shop is perfect for outfit props or inspiration. It's like a highbrow Salvation Army.

I saw cowboy boots, a whip, roller skates, aprons, metal lunch boxes, crinoline for long dresses, boomboxes, rotary phones, baby dolls.

If you need something random, just ask a salesperson. They're good at keeping tabs on what's in stock.

Costume pick : Something using those roller skates; perhaps an elephant or Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Yankee Trader

463 N. High St., Short North

Though rumors have brewed for months that this Columbus Halloween mainstay is hanging on its last fake spider web strand, it's still open Tuesday through Saturday.

They have a basic costume selection but unique accessories and party supplies - from fake axes to Mardi Gras beads. They have a good selection of face putty for creating a wicked witch nose or righteous chainsaw wounds.

Costume pick : The Grinch in Santa's clothes
