Holiday parties: The perfect party outfit

The life of the party this season is the statement piece - a sequin jacket, a faux fur wrap, skinny leather pants.

"Luxe fabrics are all over the place," said Allison Jayjack, owner of Ladybird boutique in the Short North. "They are something unexpected, and you can put your own twist on them."

The key, Jayjack said, is to pair the bold item with something simple.

This is especially important when considering holiday work parties. A good rule of thumb is to start with your normal work attire and swap one or two of the main elements with a piece that has a little more elegance or flair.

For example, slip out of your work pumps into some colorful velvet wedges, or take your jewelry up a notch with more daring selections.

While shopping for your holiday party outfit, Jayjack suggests looking for items that showcase versatility and longevity.

"People are buying pieces they can get miles out of," she said. "You want to make sure you can get another outfit out of it."

One of Ladybird's most popular pieces is an orange, loose-collared silk top by Equipment.

"You can wear it with a blazer or cinch it with a belt during the day," she said, "and then pair it with a fur vest and pencil skirt or tight pants at night."

As for dresses, solid short looks are still in, and asymmetrical detailing - like beaded flowers down one side - is getting rave reviews. Keep your stems warm with leggings or tights.

If you decide to go with a sequined dress or shirt, choose one that's loose and doesn't squeeze the figure.

"That tight stuff looks like we're reverting back to the '80s," Jayjack said.

In terms of accessories, look for items that mix media and textures, like wide leather bracelets with small rhinestone settings.

Long pendant necklaces can help spice up looks, and Jayjack said monogrammed jewelry is big. Large-stoned earrings that look like something your grandma might wear are also a nice holiday trend, she said.
