Fashion: How to wear heels with socks

If saddle shoes had a best pal back in the day, it wasn't the poodle skirt - it was the bobby sock.

They, too, are enjoying a modern day re-styling. Fold-down socks and their various relatives are being paired with heels on runway after runway.

Maren Roth, owner of Rowe Boutique in the Short North, admits wearing socks with heels is "not the easiest trend, and it can go completely wrong if it's not styled well."

Some precautions: Thin socks work best, said Esther Chung, a designer who teaches continuing education fashion classes at CCAD. And the look can be a pain - literally - when socks are paired with open-toed heels, Chung added. Do a trial run to make sure your combo is comfortable before trying to wear it all day.

Roth offered more tips for pulling off the look, which was featured in her boutique's fall fashion show:

• Go with a shorter sock height to avoid looking like you're hitting the soccer field.

• Try a high-ankle height with short skirts, dresses and cropped pants.

• Scrunch socks down to make them look more relaxed, or fold over the sock to create a more proper, classic look.

• Chunkier heels provide a visual balance with the sock.
