Restaurant Review: Brown Bag Deli

What are your addictions? Mine: coffee, magazines and window shopping. Until recently, they didn't include Brown Bag Deli's The Village Addiction, but that was mostly because I'd never tried it.

I live and work just far enough away from German Village that I never think to go to Brown Bag for lunch. Only when I happen to be driving by around lunchtime do I stop in, and I'm always glad I did.

The cozy neighborhood eatery has a welcoming staff that makes you feel like a regular, even if it's been quite some time since your last visit.

This place is a very popular lunch spot for Villagers, so be prepared to wait a bit during the lunch rush. Luckily there's a nice hanging-out vibe, whether you're at one of the well-worn wood tables inside or sitting on the brick sidewalk outside.

A large chalkboard menu is scrawled with quirky sandwich names like the Mohawk Stroller (turkey, roasted red pepper and basil pesto) and Weezie's Cheesy (vegetable cream cheese, muenster and assorted veggies).

You can also order salads, bagels and daily specials dreamed up by owner Molly Pesich.

The Village Addiction, $ 7.25

There's definitely something addictive about this sandwich, and I'm willing to bet that thing is cranberry mayonnaise.

A nice, thick layer of the stuff melds together the slices of smoked turkey and melted havarti, and all that is sandwiched between some buttered and griddled sourdough. If you've ever had a dry turkey sandwich, you'll appreciate this mayo's lubricative properties.

Brown Bag's craveable concoction is a little like a Thanksgiving dinner in melt-sandwich form, only it's delicious all year round.

As for sides, a big wall o' chips is stocked with bags of all sorts of fun options, including Route 11 varieties and Mama Zuma's Revenge Habanero chips. My salt-and-vinegar chips paired well with the slightly sweet sandwich, but you could also opt for one of the restaurant's house-made pasta salads, cookies or brownies.
