There's a sweet new way to buy local while shopping at Tuttle Crossing.

"Foot traffic was everything," said Sonya Kissi on the decision to put her bakery KissiCakes-N-Sweets in the mall's food court. "It was the absolute best decision. We already have regulars."

KissiCakes-N-Sweets sells caramel apples, cookies and pies, but the $2.50 cupcakes are the sugary standouts, with flavors like Cookies and Cream, Snickers and Cinnamon Delight.

Customer favorites include Raspberry Lemonade, lemon cake stuffed with raspberry jam and slathered in cream cheese frosting, and Buckeye Blitz, a nod to the famous treat and mascot.

Kissi is a pharmacist who used to make cookies in her spare time. Then she got hooked on Food Network's show "Cupcake Wars."

One KitchenAid mixer and a few trial-and-error recipes later, and Kissi had found a second career.

Although she still works in pharmaceuticals, she and husband George opened the KissiCakes-N-Sweets brick-and-mortar last month. Previously they'd only been selling their confections online.

All of the treats are made from scratch, and some of the recipes have unique stories. The Rainbow Brite cupcake, for example, comes from a recipe created by Kissi's grandmother, who died before Kissi was born.

"My mother and grandmother were pastry chefs, but I didn't know that until I began baking," Kissi said. "It's in the blood somewhere."
