Shopping: Candle with a Cause

The new company Candle with a Cause literally offers light, but it's the light they provide in a metaphorical sense that makes them wax on.

"Knowing we're directly benefiting some of the greatest causes in Columbus through raising funds and awareness is what makes us smile most," co-founder Dave Colina said.

Candle with a Cause makes candles out of Ohio-sourced soy wax and recycled wine bottles from Rockmill Brewery, Alana's Food and Wine and sustainable waste management group Eartha Limited. Twenty-five percent of the sales go to various local charities.

"All of us had always had a heart for social responsibility and sustainability but hadn't found the right outlet to express it," said Colina of himself and the three other guys behind Candle with a Cause. "We decided to do so in creating this business."

They rolled out the candles earlier this year at the Betty's Family restaurants such as The Jury Room and Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails, with proceeds going to no-kill animal shelter Pets Without Parents.

The company will seasonally rotate the local cause it supports. The current batch for sale are sage scented and benefit the Jack Roth Fund, a cancer research foundation at The James hospital.

Pick up the $30 candles at the Bexley Coffee Shop, the Betty's Family restaurants or the Short North's Rowe Boutique, which is owned by Jack Roth's daughter, Maren Roth. Rowe is offering 15 percent off any full-priced item with the purchase of a Candle with a Cause.

The company officially launches this Friday, coinciding with the Jack Roth Rock 'N' Run Illuminated event. The party raises money for the fund and will feature a silent auction, music, a Short North Fitness package giveaway, and food from Due Amici and Commonwealth Sandwich Bar. Tickets are $10 at Rowe.
