The New York City-based company, created by Columbus native Erin Mavian and her business partner Kym Pitlor, serves as a proposal-planning service. Mavian and Pitlor conceived the idea after helping their friends plan several milestone events, like engagement parties and bridal showers. Why did you start Blueprint Proposals in New York?

I think what is really unique about this business is that I know a lot of people that have planned special trips specifically to propose in New York City. We like to provide a service and a resource for people who don't live in New York but want to propose in New York. We can give people that ease and peace of mind when it comes to the planning, and take care of really specific details that need to be taken care of. We like to think of ourselves as marriage concierges.

How do you help in the proposal process?

It always starts with our questionnaire. After you complete that, we have a free preliminary consultation. It gives us a better understanding of who you are, how you'd like to propose and the budget you're working with. Sometimes people just need help with ideation. Others will have the idea in place, but aren't sure how to execute it.

What's the average cost for your services?

The average cost of our services runs between $500 to $1000. That's what you'd typically get with any concierge service. We'll coordinate travel and make reservations. Oftentimes, clients will want to have an immediate surprise engagement party. I love that idea. Sometimes the people at the party don't know what they are there for. We have a lot of creative ideas on how to lead people there.

What is your number one proposal tip?

I think people always either overlook the fact that this is a story that can be told for the rest of your life. It should be something that is ultimately special, memorable and personal, and make for a great love story that you can share.
